Physical Therapy

Neurological Surgery and Spine Surgery
Physical Therapy Department
  • The Department is lead by George and Laurie Stortz, a husband and wife team, who together have 63 years of experience. Both are graduates of Northwestern University Medical School, Programs in Physical Therapy. George graduated in 1974 and Laurie in 1979. George, who taught physical therapy at Northwestern University Medical School for five years, has also been the Director of the Physical Therapy Department of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago from 1985 to 1990.

  • Throughout our careers we have treated many patients with spinal disorders. For the past two and a half years our practice has been exclusively dedicated to patients with spinal derangements and dysfunctions. In this period of time we have treated well over six hundred patients. We have developed an effective, individualized program of rehabilitation for each patient, based upon that patient's needs and our experience.

  • Because there are only two therapists, it is easy to provide continuity of care. At each therapy session the patient is treated by either Laurie or George. We are able to provide focused, one-on-one care as needed by the patients. We have heard the complaints of patients that have been treated elsewhere that they never knew who would be treating them on any given day.

  • We are able to provide a degree of flexibility in scheduling the patients' initial evaluation as quickly as possible.

  • We provide an integrated team approach to patient care. We have excellent, informal communication within the team of physicians and physician's assistants. We are able to discuss the patient's response to therapy and quickly make adjustments as needed.
  • We have established a therapy center that offers the patient a therapeutic milieu. Our proven philosophy is that people get better in an environment that is comfortable, friendly, and competent.

  • We provide daily documentation of the therapy provided and note the patient's response to that therapy. We also provide progress reports to our physicians when a patient returns to his doctor for followup.
